About Rice SportLaw Society
Founded in 2024, RSLS is one of the first undergraduate led organizations created to connect legal education with the business and culture of sports.
We started the Society because students interested in sport law were often told to wait until law school to explore the field seriously. Rice offers something different: an undergraduate Sport Law concentration supported by expert faculty, rigorous coursework, and direct industry access.
Our work is grounded in a simple belief: talented students should not have to wait for permission to contribute.
RSLS turns that belief into action. We help students compete nationally, publish legal scholarship, learn from attorneys and executives, and build the judgment required to enter law school, agencies, teams, leagues, and corporate practice prepared to lead.

Nearly every defining issue in sports is now a legal issue.
The last several years have transformed college and professional sports. Courts, legislatures, leagues, athletes, schools, and businesses are redefining who has power, how value is shared, and what the future of competition looks like.

A national first
Undergraduates belong in the room.
RSLS has opened national competition pathways that were rarely available to undergraduates. Rice students became first time undergraduate participants in Tulane’s baseball arbitration and fútbol negotiation competitions. In 2026, Rice entered the professional basketball negotiation competition as one of only two undergraduate teams in a field composed primarily of law and graduate students.

Like a lower division club chasing FA Cup glory at Wembley, the plucky undergrad team from Rice University pulled off a series of upsets against law schools in the 4th Annual Tulane International Fútbol Negotiation Competition before finally bowing out in a close semifinal loss.
